While growing up in the City of Philadelphia, enjoying the morning church service was something to really think about for days to come. The move of the spirit, people being saved, healed, encouraged and set free. No matter how bad your week was, fellowship with Gods people was a real encouragement and your spirit was lifted by the time worship was over. There was such a spirit of reverence and respect for the place in which the saints gathered together for worship.
More than 30 years ago, we didn’t have the ability to stream video from cell phones (we had pay phones) we could not text, tweet or communicate instantly during the service, but we could pass notes and whisper or ask the usher to pass the note or meet in the back of the church to pass on a message quietly. The word church seems to carry a different meaning to different people. For some, its something that you do, for many other its a place in which you go and yet, for many others its the place you turn to when you need prayer, school supplies or assistance in getting your next meal. The church should be a place in which a community can reach out to for help, both spiritual and natural, but that seems to almost be a thing of the past. It’s a known fact (for many) that, the church is not the physical building. While many christian refer the the physical location of where the people of God assemble as the church, many do not realize that God does not reside in a building of prefab or brick and mortar. He lives in people. Read more on We’ve been called out….

Once in awhile you might pray, once in awhile you might tell someone that you love them, once in awhile you might visit someone who is sick and once in awhile you might call them on the phone. Once in awhile you might care and once in awhile you might not, once in awhile you might share a special moment with a loved one or once in awhile you forget about them. Have you ever heard the phrase in the church; “the word says to be ye also ready!”. Preaching on a dime is synonymous with “stopping or turning on a dime”; it denotes a quick action without any thought or preparation; a reflex.
The phrase “be ye also ready” Its most commonly used by preachers and church folk alike who believe and expect preachers, missionaries or church member to preach or perform on a moments notice; without preparation, preach by reflex, just do it. Here is a thought: Whenever God would have you do something, He’s already prepared it or you!
Therefore, I believe that a believer will be able to teach or preach on a dime, when God desires to use you in that spur of the moment situation; the situation is sour of the moment for us, but already know (who, what when and where) by God. We should not have popcorn sermons just to occupy the time in a church program, we encourage the spirit of entertainment and we put on display how prepared and skilled certain preachers are. What is the preacher, truly did not have something to contribute at that moment? What if they truly feel that God did not inspire or initiate the words about to be spoken? Then they are operating in their flesh.
Preaching and teaching the Gospel is serious business, the souls of man, women and children are at stake and the Word of God should not
be subjected to entertaining or aiding the pulpit administrator in the passing of time ( of as a filler) during a program or service. It is disrespectful (to Gods Word) and unprofessional to call a preacher on Saturday night and say…”Your Preaching” on this Sunday (even the priest in the temple had time to prepare a sacrifice…).
The daily walk that a believer has with Jesus Christ and the personal study and devotional time that one takes to deepen their faith will cause you to be ready for any situation that God desires to use you in. The problem in most places of fellowship is that, people expect and are use to some form of entertainment during the preached word; a raising of the hands; a smooth jester that commands a “Yes Lawd” from the crowd and a prayer that will jerk tears from your eyes. ” Now that’s preaching” we would say; “that preacher was anointed”, we would say.
The possible danger in preaching on a dime to test ones readiness, faithfulness or to simple fill space in a program or service is;
- You will succeed in wowing the crowd, in your flesh.
- God will show the people your are in your self and they reject your performance (and you are exposed and embarrassed).
- The people will be fooled into thinking it was a word from the Lord and misplace their faith in something that God did not say, promise or sanction.
If you are ever put on the spot to preach, share, teach; give to them what God gave to you. To conjure up anything more that that is relying on your skill, your knowledge, yourself, your flesh. You can never go wrong when you stop and ask God to direct your thoughts, your word and actions, that He might be glorified.
Proverbs 3: 5 Trust in the LORD with all thine heart; and lean not unto thine own understanding. 6 In all thy ways acknowledge him, and he shall direct thy paths.
