In part 1 of this post, I gave an introduction, exposing the fact that gimmicks are used in the church. For those whom are offended, continue to read. I make no apologies because this is my experience and it happens is churches everywhere. There are so many rituals in the average church worship service, things like: stand up, read this, sit down, stand again, go to three people and say this.
Programs are sponsored by churches to get people in the door, increase the Sunday School attendance and raise money for the new flat screens in the over flow room. There are a host of methods used to get people in the door and weather you like reading about it or not, when you appeal to what attracts people, your no doubt marketing and there is a gimmick to most if not all marketing strategies. Why not…They Work! I can vividly remember sitting in a church meeting and the topic was how do we get the people to come in? The leader exclaimed…’What We Need Is A Gimmick’. The concern was to fill the pews, after all there were
bills to pay. There was an old saying in the black church…’When The Church Catches Fire, The World Will Come Out To Watch It Burn’.
To those who may not know what this means, it simply meant that if the church was about the business of souls, God would move by His mighty power, it would be something that the world has yet seen, it will capture their interest an they will come to see what is going on in that church.
Since it seems that many places of worship have blended in with their surroundings, there is little for the world to see. Evangelicals and faith healers have Healing and Miracle Services on command and for what? To seemingly promote their agenda, sell their Cd’s and books and to raise money for their ministries. Many of these overnight sensations are endorsed by other self proclaimed Master Prophets, Prophetess and faith healers alike and many will resort to using gimmicks to get the attention of Church Goers and religious folk. If you take note, I did not say believers. Read more on Using Gimmicks In The Church – Part 1…

Advertisers use it, military recruiters, car sales persons and yes, even in the church, emotional appeals are used. Not all emotional appeals are wrong, what the motivation of the person using one? Is the reason to make a quota? Raise an offering? Increase awareness of a danger? Is the appeal far fetched? Is it believable and factual?
When tragedy hit Haiti, shortly after you would see pictures of the devastation, the faces of crying children with captions like: “No where to go, no one to care for them” or “scared and hungry”. Upon seeing such images the appeal is then made for you to give. There is nothing wrong with giving to a cause, a charity or to simply help someone in need.
Emotional appeals do exactly that, they appeal to your sense of emotion, weather love, anger, concern and fear. Emotional appeals are used in advertising, sales pitches and even in many churches, why! They work! Read more on Emotional Appeal…
