Fellowship is a word most seldom heard in many black churches. Membership, on the other hand, is what many churches strive to increase. What good is a large membership if true fellowship is lacking? I find it amazing, you could miss a month of Sundays and when you show up, those greeting you say how much they missed you and they were thinking about you. It seems those who missed you so dearly, could not pick up the phone to check on you and the pastor seemingly has no time for one sheep who strays from their flock. I remember the days when fellowship at the local church was a real place to connect and get encouraged in the faith. Read more on Going back to church, what I’m not looking forward to….

Church, the place where people go to sing songs, pray, give an offering and listen to a good sermon. From time to time you may hear someone say “why don’t you come and go to church with me”. Have you even been asked this? If so, how did you reply? I’ve often heard the religious folk say, “You should really come, It will make you feel better” Or “Our pastor is really a good guy” Or, “We have a really good choir.” Is this the mentality of believers? While growing up in the City of Philadelphia, enjoying the morning church service was something to really think about for days to come. The move of the spirit, people being saved, healed, encouraged and set free. No matter how bad your week was, fellowship with Gods people was a real encouragement and your spirit was lifted by the time worship was over. There was such a spirit of reverence and respect for the place in which the saints gathered together for worship.
More than 30 years ago, we didn’t have the ability to stream video from cell phones (we had pay phones) we could not text, tweet or communicate instantly during the service, but we could pass notes and whisper or ask the usher to pass the note or meet in the back of the church to pass on a message quietly. While running a few errands today, I went past a familiar spot of town and noticed a church that use to be in a particular spot. The building was present, the marquee was their, but it was blank; evidence the build was once used by church members. Seeing the church building vacated like that reminded me of the many of vacated homes throughout the many counties in Georgia. Homes once inhabited, now vacant, a reminder of bad economic times.
