I can recall those words in the title as they were spoken by many church leaders; “Church is like a business and that’s how you manage and run it…like a business”. Today I had a thought; in this shady economy, many businesses try to win back customers they have lost over the years. Businesses are offering rebates, deep discounts and incentives to get you in the door and get you to spend your hard earned money.
Although I can vividly remember the last time I heard from my local church, it is far from being run like a business. I get more postcards from department stores and retailers offering free appetizers and discounts than I do from my former place of worship. Something is really wrong with this picture, although leaving was my choice, they were quick to remove my name from the rolls. If a member leaves or has been out for many Sundays; what ever happened to a phone call, a card or letter…how about a visit?
Years ago I parted ways with A.O.L, and to this day I continue to get the “occasional” We want you back advertisement. I though about switching wireless carriers and they encouraged me to stay on awhile longer because of the new changes that were coming; they gave me 150 free minutes for being a loyal customer; I’ve been with the company for 5 years now.
If Churches were truly run like a business (yet preaching the Word of God), leaders and faithful members should know; the bottom line in business is the dollar; the bottom line in the church is a soul! Just as businesses will go the extra mile to get you and keep, how much more should the church (members) go the extra mile, step out of the four walls of their comfort zone…to win and or encourage a soul!
Run it like a business.
