How To: Tarry for the Holy Ghost.
Okay, here I go again. Another topic in which I though maybe this was a thing of the past and during my era when growing up in the church. I can distinctly remember upon receiving Jesus Christ as Lord and Savior I was assigned to “the Tarrying Class”, this was a class where certain select members of the church (verified as filled with the Holy Ghost) would teach you how to tarry.
I know, it sounds really foolish, wait until you realize that the definition of the word. We (myself and 5 others) went into a room, and we received instructions to say this (thank you Jesus), do this (close your eyes and raise your hands), now say it faster…faster…faster; by this time I received a slap on the back and in my fear I stammered, it was then the deacon told me that …”You almost had it” I must of thought out really loud because the expression on my face said…”You Have To Be Kidding Me!” You slapped my on my back and startled me, my eyes were closed babbling some gibberish and your telling me I almost had it! …Had What? Now, as I remember, there was never a class teaching me what or who this Holy Ghost thing was, and I could never find any example in the bible of anyone else tarrying for the Holy Ghost as we did.
Church traditions really have a way of influencing what goes on in the church. Does anybody stop for a moment and say …what? Or I don’t understand, please tell me more. I remember when the pastors wife to me that I was too young to understand, wow, a lot of good that did me.
I think anyone that can ask a question is ready to make an attempt in understanding, the question is …can you explain it? Can you properly guide someone without giving them what your great uncle Ricky said (and he should know, he’s been in the church 40 years). Don’t give people your tradition and how we did it when you were early in the church. Give them what is written in the pages of the book.
People of God, the Holy Ghost is not an IT, it is a HE, the Spirit of God Himself is who He Is. The Holy Ghost is a divine personality with knowledge, feelings emotions and will.
This is the same spirit that walked in the garden with Adam, the same spirit that descended on the day of Pentecost and He is still Here. You do not have to wait, linger or delay for Him. Jesus has sent Him and God has Given Him as a gift to the believer.
Definition of tarry:
- tarry (v.)
- early 14c., “to delay, retard,” of uncertain origin. Some suggest a connection to L. tardare “to delay,” or O.E. tergan “to vex, irritate.” Intransitive meaning “to linger” is attested from late 14c.
- So, does one have to wait for, linger or delay for the indwelling of the spirit of God? No! Will I have to wait for Jesus to really clean me up so that His spirit can indwell me? No! I do not believe this for the following reason See: 2 Corinthians 5:17. I do however, believe the disciples had to wait (until endowed with power from on high ) because they were instructed to do so by Christ. See Luke 24:49
