From one Epoch to the next.

by nlewis on January 1, 2012 · 0 comments

August marks a new month for “Going Against The Grain”. The first article was written back in 2005 and was birthed out the desire to write the thoughts and contents of my heart, much of the content is from my experience in the Church (C.O.G.I.C) and my Christian walk.

I can remember many days when I had a question during a Bible study and I always had the suspicion that there was something missing from the answers that were given. The more I would research, the more I realized there was something shaded in the responses of the teachers and I could see on the face of students, their reluctance to ask more questions.

I wouldn’t share with many of the believers that I worshiped with that I wrote a blog, back in 2005, when I started writing, the notion and concept of a website was still new in the mind of some believers. Since what I wrote about opposed the views of the status quo, I only shared with those who were secure and strong in their faith.

Epoch is an event, a memorable event or date.  Going Against The Grain is one of many memorably events in my life, one thing it represents to me is the day that I became aware. Aware of what ? Aware that something was wrong in organized worship services, this is not to say that I believe that it should be unorganized. In the worship services, when we as believers are told when to say AMEN, when to stand up and clap, when to come to worship, when and how much to give and all we do is follow along and ask no questions; something is wrong..(say Amen).

The present economy marks another memorable time in the lives of many people, the beginning of new relationships will mark another pivotal and memorable time in the lives of others. So what is the point and the motivation of this article?

If you were an avid watch collector and knew your history, you would know that 10:08 is a setting for all time pieces when advertised or displayed, its the industry standard. Why?  It started with the Timex watch company and it was discovered that more watches were sold with the setting of 10:08 than 8:21. There was a subconscious association with sadness using 8:21; as a result less watches were sold. More watches were sold with the setting of 10:08 which seemed to be associated with smiling and being happy; this amazing discovery was epoch for the watch industry.

We can look back on one Epoch to the one before it and with each event we can remember something happy, something sad, something joyful and something that we wish to forget, but each of those times made us the people we are today. Some may never recall nor do they care about the past or the present time but our experiences (I believe) are meant to be shared so that someone else can learn. The evidence is in our youth today, the evidence is in the morning church service as you look at couples; husbands and wives.

As the month of August progresses and the end of the year approaches, another epoch will await to manifest itself on the horizon and through each period of time God has been and is faithful to bring us through.
