The old saying is true, “If mamma isn’t happy then no one else in the house is going to be happy either!” The same is true of our relationship with God. My pastor teaches (and I paraphrase), that a right angle cannot occur if the boundaries of your life are not properly aligned. If the vertical (Supernatural, Spiritual) in your life is not right, then the horizontal (natural, earthly) will never be right. Remember the old television sets? To obtain optimal picture placement and clarity, you had to manually align the horizontal and the vertical adjustment knobs on the back of the set. Failure to do so resulted in a distorted picture. This is why many people today have a distorted “picture” of God and godliness; they haven’t made that proper vertical alignment.
How can we improve our relationship with the Father? You may find an answer by asking the question, “What makes me happy and feel loved in a relationship?” Or, “what does it take to maintain a healthy, happy marriage?” In healthy relationships, communication is critical. Therefore, we should spend quality time each day in prayer, meditation and personal reflection. Prayer is not you doing all the talking. Sometimes you just need to stop talking, and give God a chance to speak! It involves listening as much as speaking. This is why God designed us with two ears, but only one mouth – because we’re supposed to listen twice as much as we speak.
In your prayer time, concentrate on questions, such as, “In what ways can I stop doing things my way and start doing things God’s way?” Historically speaking, the only thing that has ever limited the power of God in the earth has been the will of man. God cannot violate the precepts of His Word; neither will He violate man’s free-will. Each of us possesses the power to make conscious decisions. Be aware, however, our choices cultivate change in our lives – for better or worse – the choice is ours. God’s power and presence in your life is limited only by your expectations. Ask yourself, “How big do I want God to be in me? How much power do I want to see? How free do I want to be?”
Just remember, regardless of your current circumstances, you are a child of the King. Jesus said, “All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.” (Mat 28:18)
He goes into further detail, “But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses….” (Acts 1:8) For in Christ all the fullness of the Deity lives in bodily form, and you have been given fullness in Christ, who is the head over every power and authority. (Col 2:8-10)
God knows what’s best for us. He knows what we need even before we ask it. He simply enjoys sharing His authority with us through the power of His Spirit and the influence of a simple prayer. Having aligned yourself vertically, spending time talking and listening to God, you’ll be amazed in the difference fellowship with the Father makes.
