Evangelism, Witnessing to the World

by nlewis on April 17, 2012 · 0 comments

I recall during the first two years of my salvation, I frequently went out street witnessing with a few friends. One night in particular we were outside an alternative dance club late at night where we spoke to some young adults. The Spirit of God was so intensely upon me, I was like a blazing firebrand. A young man to whom we were witnessing accused me of being on cocaine because my eyes were so bright and penetrating. I told him the only drugs I was on were the drugs of heaven–the power of the Holy Ghost.

Spiritual things are foolishness to fleshly people who are mindful of only natural things. The realm of the spirit is not easily discernable to carnally minded individuals who never enter the spiritual arena. “The natural man does not receive the things of the Spirit of God; for they are foolishness unto him, neither can he know them, because they are spiritually discerned” (1 Cor. 2:14). I therefore take no offense to the reactions I get from carnally minded people who see me as foolish and out of touch. It is actually just the opposite. It is we the children of God who are “in touch,” while they who seemingly are in touch with the natural are actually out of touch with the spiritual. Thank God for Christ Jesus to make a bridge whereby we humans given to the natural can cross over and engage the spiritual.

Constrained by the love of Christ, we His people grieve for every soul that is estranged from God. Yet when we repeatedly get backlash by those uninterested in the God we love, it is quite easy to acquire an attitude that is content to let the lost all go to hell. Jeremiah the prophet certainly knew rejection, as his message was not always popular among his people. At the height of Jeremiah’s discouragement, he determined to speak no longer on God’s behalf. “Then I said, I will not make mention of Him, nor speak any more in His name” (Jer. 20:9a). The list of preachers who have felt and said the same thing (whether inwardly or outwardly) at one time or another would probably boggle the mind of a few “saintly” churchgoers. Nevertheless such are the feelings with which ministers weary in well doing have to cope.

Just when Jeremiah was ready to throw in the towel and call it quits, an unusual sensation began to soothe his soul. Even his bones were affected by this igniting fire that overtook him. Jeremiah said of it, “His word was in my heart like a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I was weary with forbearing, and I could not refrain” (Jer. 20:9).

Despite the defaming of many and fear on every side, when the fire of God’s Spirit stepped in and affected him, Jeremiah had to open his mouth wide. With mouth opened wide, Jeremiah released from his heart what God had put inside. You just can’t hold back when God’s fire is burning you up! You’ve got to get it out, lest you fall out! You have got to release it to find spiritual relief from it. It’s an overwhelming fire that burns you within, makes your heart beat rapidly, and removes all timidity. To try to forbear and deny it expression is to be experience inner vexation. It’s bitter in the belly, but sweet in the mouth. So the only solution is to open your mouth wide and to let it all out!
